Our Movement

Observing, Recording, Protecting - Plants, Animals & Other Living Things

The Community Ecology Movement was founded to solve a challenge many individuals and communities face: wanting to preserve important species and protect land, but not knowing how or where to start. Inspired by her own journey - learning through trial, error, and academic study - our founder developed practical methods to survey, document, and safeguard the animals and plants in her local environment. This initiative aims shares these hard-earned lessons to empower others to become citizen scientists.

The UK has one of the most ecologically deprived environments in Europe. Yet, incredible nature is closer than we realise - existing right under our noses, (and our feet!) if we know how to look - wildlife and habitats that deserve to be protected and celebrated!

You don't need to be an ecological surveyor to map and record species in your area. With the right tools and guidance anyone - whether an individual or group - can take action to preserve precious ecosystems.

Our Initiatives & Workshops

Recording Plants & Animals - for Individuals

We offer hands-on or online workshops to help individuals begin to identify, record and document important species accurately, so they are protected long into the future. We’ll teach you how to gather the right evidence, and where to submit it, so your records count!  No experience in ecological surveying or prior knowledge of plants and animals is required - just a passion for nature and a curiosity to learn!  The training comes with a citizen science resource pack to help you on your journey. Prices are on a sliding scale, depending on your needs and income status, starting at £100 per workshop.

Recording Plants & Animals - for Groups

Setting up an Online Project for Your Local Area

If you are a group in a specific area or place, wanting to carry out citizen science ecological surveys and take biological records of specific species, we'll give you easy-to-use templates for recording wildlife data, and show you how to set up an online hub to keep track of your collective findings. Plus, we’ll provide all the tools you need to share your data with the right organisations, making sure your species findings are stored in public and private databases for future reference. That way, your discoveries can be accessed by others down the line - whether it’s for a formal ecological survey tied to a planning application or just by people or scientists who want to learn from your records. The training can be face to face, or online, and comes with a resource pack to help your group get going. Prices are on a sliding scale depending on your needs starting at £200 per workshop.
